OGPS Science Writing & Communication | Same Science, Different Room: Adapting Your Message Across Disciplines & Audiences
This event is organized by the Michigan Medicine Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies
Join us for this workshop to develop practical strategies for communicating your research effectively across disciplines and audiences. Designed specifically for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in the biomedical sciences, this session will explore how the same research may need to be framed differently depending on the audience, what they already know, and what they need to understand or do.
Through hands-on examples and guided practice, you’ll learn how to identify what matters most to a particular audience, adjust technical detail and terminology, and communicate the relevance and significance of your work without sacrificing accuracy. You’ll practice adapting the same scientific message for different audiences and contexts, with strategies you can apply to research talks, interdisciplinary discussions, written summaries, and other professional communication.
Workshop Goals:
– Identify the background knowledge, needs, and expectations of different scientific and professional audiences
– Learn strategies for adjusting technical detail, terminology, context, and emphasis while maintaining scientific accuracy
– Practice identifying and communicating the central message, relevance, and significance of your research for different audiences
– Build confidence adapting your research communication across disciplinary and professional settings
